Important New Income Tax Form Numbers from April 2026: Form 16 Becomes Form 130

New Income Tax Form Numbers from April 2026 will bring a major structural change to India’s tax reporting system. Starting April 1, 2026, several commonly used forms such as Form 16, Form 26AS, Form 24Q, Form 26Q, Form 27Q, and Forms 3CA/3CB/3CD will receive new form numbers under the Income-tax Act, 2025 and the Draft Income-tax Rules, 2026.

These reforms aim to simplify tax compliance, standardise statutory reporting, and modernise the tax filing framework. Several widely used forms such as Form 16, Form 26AS, Form 24Q, Form 26Q, Form 27Q, and Forms 3CA/3CB/3CD will be assigned new form numbers under the updated system.

The new income tax form numbers from April 2026 are expected to make reporting clearer and more consistent while aligning with the provisions of the new tax legislation.

Why the Government Is Renumbering Income Tax Forms

The introduction of new income tax form numbers from April 1, 2026 is part of a broader initiative to restructure the tax administration framework in India. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces many procedural aspects of the earlier law and introduces modernised reporting formats.

Renumbering the forms will help the Income Tax Department create a uniform numbering structure across tax forms, making it easier for taxpayers, auditors, and professionals to identify compliance requirements.

Additionally, the draft rules outline eight transition mechanisms to help taxpayers smoothly shift from the current forms to the new income tax forms structure without disruption in compliance.

Form 16 Renamed as New Form 130

One of the most important changes in the new income tax form numbers from April 2026 is the renumbering of Form 16, the widely used TDS certificate for salary income.

Under the new framework, Form 16 will be renamed as Form 130. Employers will continue issuing this form to employees as proof of tax deducted at source on salary payments. The updated form will also include certification related to pension and interest income for specified senior citizens under the relevant provisions of the new Act.

Despite the change in numbering, the purpose of the form will remain largely the same, ensuring continuity for salaried taxpayers.

Forms 3CA, 3CB and 3CD Merged into New Form 26

Another major reform in the New Income Tax Form Numbers from April 1, 2026 involves tax audit reporting. Currently, tax audits require submission of Forms 3CA, 3CB, and 3CD, which together constitute the tax audit report and statement of particulars.

Under the Draft Income-tax Rules, 2026, these three forms will be consolidated into a single form called Form 26. This change will simplify tax audit compliance and reduce documentation complexity for auditors and businesses.

The new Form 26 will be submitted in accordance with Section 63 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, making the tax audit reporting process more streamlined.

Form 16A Renamed as Form 131

Another important update in the New Income Tax Form Numbers numbering system is the renaming of Form 16A, which is currently issued as a TDS certificate for non-salary income such as professional fees, contractor payments, and interest.

From April 2026, Form 16A will be renumbered as Form 131. It will continue serving the same purpose of providing taxpayers with official confirmation that tax has been deducted at source on payments other than salary.

Changes in TDS Return Forms

The new income tax form numbers from April 2026 also include changes to quarterly TDS return forms filed by deductors.

The quarterly TDS statement for salary payments, currently filed as Form 24Q, will be renumbered as Form 138. This form will be used to report TDS deducted from salary income for each quarter ending June, September, December, and March.

Similarly, Form 26Q, which is used for reporting TDS on non-salary payments, will be renamed Form 140. Deductors must continue filing this quarterly statement for payments made to resident taxpayers.

For payments made to non-residents, the existing Form 27Q will be replaced with Form 144, which will serve as the updated quarterly TDS return form for such transactions.

Form 26AS to Be Replaced by Form 168

One of the most widely accessed taxpayer documents is Form 26AS, which provides a consolidated statement of tax credits including TDS, TCS, and advance tax payments.

Under the Draft Income-tax Rules, 2026, Form 26AS will be renumbered as Form 168. This change is part of the broader restructuring of reporting formats under the new Act.

The updated Form 168 will continue to function as an Annual Information Statement, allowing taxpayers to track taxes deducted or collected against their PAN.

The introduction of new income tax form numbers from April 1, 2026 marks a significant transformation in India’s tax compliance framework.
